Resting in Jesus
Viewing with a practiced eye the free and fearless confidence of Peter and John (as manifested in their uninhibited and unreserved manner of speaking) and comprehending the fact that they were without formal education (and that they were not professional men but laymen) they began to wonder and kept on wondering - and they began to recognize them as those who were with Jesus.
Acts 4:13 - Wuest's Expanded Translation
The speech Peter and John made before the elders and rulers of Israel must have thrilled God. Their unfettered eloquence gave glory to Jesus. They were not overawed by the status of those surrounding them. They were not self-conscious of their own lower class background. Instead, they rested and were confident in the knowledge of who was with them - Jesus!
Peter and John had a revelation of Jesus as the Christ and risen Lord. They had knowledge in their inner man of who Jesus was - the one who loved and esteemed them. This is what we need. We need to know Jesus with us through thick and thin, sticking up for us and encouraging us no matter what's happening. This is what Stephen experienced. Stephen spoke out boldly for the truth and in his martyrdom he saw Jesus standing in Heaven. Jesus had got to His feet for him. He was probably applauding! Acts 7:56.
Jesus is proud of us for living for Him. He is particularly proud when we do it with confidence in His love and without fear or anxiety. Consider what God through Christ has done in your life. Reflect on how by His Spirit He has given you His power, His love and a sound mind. Be released into bold confidence in His love and faithfulness. 2Tim.1:7.
Knowing Jesus live life in confidence!
