The Daily Guide
From a friend and mentor
I am sure of this, I know that I shall remain and continue to stand by you all, to help you forward in Christian living and to find increasingly joy in your faith. So that you may feel great pride in me as your minister in Christ when I come and see you again!
Philippians 1:25-26 - J.B.Phillips' translation
Great performers have often had great mentors. Yehudi Menuhin, for example, mentored some of the greatest violin players of our time. Equally in the church mentors have an important role. The apostle Paul mentored Timothy and today elders in the church should be mentors to younger members. A mentor is a wise, faithful counsellor. If you have someone who mentors you you should very much value and appreciate them. 1 Timothy 5:7.
At the same time, we can be mentored by the apostles and the prophets. They may have departed from this earth long ago but today, thanks to God's Holy Spirit, they can mentor us through their letters. Paul's epistles are letters - letters with words from a mentor to those he's chosen to mentor. Paul, by God's Spirit, through his letters will mentor you if you'll allow it.
Open the New Testament and turn to one of Paul's epistles. Imagine it just arrived in the post. Feel the letter's paper between your fingers and see the handwriting on the page. It's a personal letter from a friend. Connect with what he's writing. Relate to what he's saying. Connect with him. Then start responding to his counsel and encouragement as you would to that of a dear and trusted friend. In this way, Paul will become your mentor. Give thanks to God for this man of God and his mentorship!
Allow yourself to benefit from mentoring!
