Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:1 - NKJV
Peter calls the faith we have received precious faith. Precious faith means faith that is to be highly esteemed. This faith we have received is something very special - something to be greatly valued. For this reason we need to treasure it and guard it very diligently.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son gives us an example of how faith and the works of faith were lost. The Prodigal Son went away from the Father. In departing from the Father he also departed from the principles of the Father's house - the ones he had grown up with. We hear this clearly about the Father's financial principles. Instead of tithing (Gen.28:20-22) and giving (Luk.6:38), the son spent all his money wastefully (Luk.15:13). The woeful state the son ended up in was due not only to his departure from his Father but also from the Father's principles. As a result, at the time he desperately needed a harvest there was none! (Luk.15:16)
Guarding your faith - treasuring your faith - means sticking in close and continuous fellowship with the Father. It's in times of walking your own way, apart from the Father, that you turn aside from His principles - the very principles that build faith and cause your faith to work and produce in your life. Your faith - our precious faith - is nurtured and sustained in the presence of the Father and in the keeping of His principles.
Treasure your faith in fellowship with your Father!
