The Daily Guide
Experts in goodness
Your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good.
Romans 16:19 - NKJV
William Barclay translates the line "I want you to be wise in what is good" as "I want you to be experts in goodness". It's going to take God's wisdom for us to be experts in goodness! In situations that have come up we've often known what was good. We've even committed ourselves to it. However, when it's come to carrying it out we've been more like novices than experts. What are we to do about this? We need to ask God for His wisdom! Ja.1:5
I know you're a sincere believer. I know you're looking to be engaged in goodness. You almost certainly have good projects lined up to do. Now before you start, ask God for His wisdom. Get His wisdom for the planning stage and for the doing stage. An increase of God's peace in your life is going to come out of performing in God's wisdom those good things He's put on your heart to do. Ask for wisdom and you'll receive wisdom. The wisdom you'll receive will be just as James described it, "Peaceable, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits." See James 3:17
Embarking on what is good shouldn't lead you into all sorts of complications and troubles. If that's been your experience up to now get ready to change how you've been approaching things. Realise how much you need God's wisdom for carrying out what is good! Forget your natural understanding of how to get things done. Resort instead to the wisdom that the Holy Spirit is able to provide you with. In prayer seek His leading. Take His wisdom to heart and act upon it. Prov.3:5-6.
Let God give you wisdom for goodness!
