The burst sugar bag

by Pastor Simon

Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 - Amplified Bible

Paul leaves us with some great counsel as he closes his first letter to the Thessalonians. The counsel above comes from that passage. The whole passage consists of sentences of exhortation of a similar sort. Each one of them provides us with very practical counsel. They tell you what you can and should do in your daily life as a Christian. 1Thes.5:14-22.

I remember as a babe in Christ suppressing the Spirit. I was unloading a van of groceries. I was youthfully throwing things in through the doorway. As I grabbed a bag of sugar a vivid picture flashed before me of it landing and splitting on the hall floor. I threw it in anyway ignoring the picture and - you guessed it - the sugar bag burst as it landed! I took this incident as an important illustration from the Lord of the Holy Spirit's ministry in a Christian's life and of His desire to help us in our every day affairs. It made me realise how available the Holy Spirit is to us. It showed me the reality of the Spirit's ministry to His children at all times. Joh.16:13.

As a Spirit-filled believer the ministry of the Holy Spirit is available to you. God's Spirit delights in being with you to help, comfort and counsel you. He will do this, in countless small ways as well as big, through prompts and urgings throughout your day if you stay open to His ministry. As you respond to Him over little things and you will become more responsive to Him over the big things. In whatever you're doing, whether it's praying or worshipping or simply engaging in the tasks of life, be open and attentive to the Holy Spirit's ministry. By this God can counsel you in your actions and ways. Ro.7:6.
