A cry for liberty

by Pastor Simon

In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free.

Psalm 118:5 - NIV

Never underestimate the power of crying out to the Lord in your anguish (your distress)! After all, for many of us this was how we came to salvation in the first place! God has an ear for the distress of His people. He will hear every cry of distress - we only need to make it to the Father in confidence of His power. At the same time though, He will also require us to tell Him what we want done!

Bartimaeus was in great distress over his blindness and his resulting life of begging. When he heard Jesus was coming his way he cried out to Him. He addressed Him as "Son of David" and called for mercy. There were discouragers there who told him to shut up but he would not be stopped from his purpose. He cried out all the more. Jesus called him to Him. Jesus asked, "What do you want Me to do for you?" It seems Jesus could perceive this man's receiving faith. Nevertheless, He wanted Bartimaeus to express exactly what his faith to receive was focused on. Bartimaeus answered, "Rabboni, that I may receive my sight." Mark 10:46-52.

Bartimaeus received what he had faith for and what he asked for in his distress. This a lesson for you. You're distressed but what is it that will change this condition of distress? You need to perceive your need at its most fundamental level - the revelation of God's Spirit in your inner man will show you what you most require for a lasting solution. Then you can petition the Lord precisely. Show God your requirement, your expectation and your faith by the words of your prayer. Open the door for Him to set you free! Ro.8:26-27.

Tell God exactly what you need!
