Blowing in the wind

by Pastor Simon

Your zeal must never flag. You must keep your enthusiasm at boiling point. You must always be serving the Lord.

Romans 12:11 - Barclay's translation

In a wide margin Bible I used to have I wrote six different translations of that verse above. All of them blessed me. The translation I've chosen above is from William Barclay. My attention was caught by it because he uses the phrase "never flag". "Funny expression!" I thought, "How did that come into the English language?" An answer came to me as a picture. I saw a flag limply hanging from its pole, no wind holding it up. It had flagged!

The apostle Paul exhorts, "You are never to flag." You are to maintain your zeal. How can you keep it that way? By staying unfurled and free to blow in the wind of the Holy Spirit! Your zeal has to come from the Holy Spirit. It's the Holy Spirit who has to lift you up and stretch you out in a glorious display of the colours of God's Kingdom. For this you need to be in the baptism - the immersion - of the Spirit's zeal and glory like to that experienced by the disciples on the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2:1-4

What an impact the Holy Spirit had on the Early Church in the days immediately following the Day of Pentecost! This same impact and effect of the Holy Spirit should visible on our lives. The promise Jesus made for the Holy Spirit remains the same today. He said, "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever." The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is still here. Let yourself be caught up by the Spirit's breeze. Be unfurled and flying in His presence. Let Him display the glory of God and His kingdom through you. Joh.14:16, Acts 2:32-33,16-21.

Welcome the Holy Spirit!
