Discipleship
If you abide in My word (hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them), you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.

As God's children by the new birth it's not in our heavenly nature to sin. Nevertheless, in this life our earthly nature still gets the upper hand at times. At times it's as though sin were dogging your feet even though God's Word declares, "Sin shall not have dominion over you." The knowledge of the truth can set you free! The truth of God liberates you from hampering sin when that knowledge is revealed to your heart. This knowledge of the truth comes to Christ's disciples. Ro.6:14.
We usually think of Christ's disciples as the followers of Christ. Jesus, though, defines it more specifically than that. He says disciples are those who live in His Word, taking it to heart and living it out in their lives. In a sense, this is a price of discipleship. Nominal Christians don't pay the price and as a consequence don't access the promised liberty. Are you paying this price of discipleship to Christ? If the last time you personally meditated on a scripture was the last time you were at church then you aren't. Daily spending time in God's word is this price of discipleship.
Jesus promises that if you pay this price of discipleship you will have a supreme reward - your freedom! Freedom from what? Some people say, "We're already free. What more can discipleship give us?" Jesus promises the glorious liberty of freedom from sin. He says you can be free from slavery to sin. He says, "If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed!" Joh.8:36, Heb.12:1.
