Apprenticeship to Jesus
For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
Hebrews 5:13 - NKJV
The apostle Paul in his letter to the Hebrews equates being a babe in Christ with being unskilled in the word of righteousness. The implication is that with increasing maturity in Christ is to come increasing skill in the word. How is this going to happen? Skill emphasises doing. Students, for example, generally work on gaining knowledge while apprentices work on developing skill. It's apprentices of Jesus Christ that we are to be! We are to walk with Him and work with Him watching how He does it. Ja.1:22, Mat.11:29.
Notice that skill is different to knowledge. You can know something without having skill in it. Skill is about hands on experience. You can develop skill in God's Word through practice at using it in all circumstances of life. Get to know God's word, apprentice yourself to Jesus and you can have skill in it. You will be able voice it effectively in times of crisis, share it in order to comfort others and pray it to petition God for your needs.
Developing skill needs safe circumstances in which to practice the skill. My sport in my youth was gymnastics. In developing gymnastic's skills we had to put potentially dangerous movements into safe situations. A common way to do this was to have the coach and another gymnast right in close to provide support where needed. In the same way, you can have a safe situation to develop your skill with God's word by letting the Holy Spirit and a mature Christian brother or sister be in close with you giving you support where you need it.
May you get skillful in God's Word!
