Moved, not shaken

by Pastor Simon

It happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him (Elijah), saying,"Arise, go to Zarephath."

1 Kings 17:7-9 - NKJV

A few years ago a letter came telling us that as a family we were no longer eligible for certain funding. This meant quite a large, regular amount of money coming into our home would stop. I could have been really shaken by that but I wasn't. At one time I would have been. However, these days I have a revelation on the inside about who my real supplier is and my expectation is towards Him. So I started quoting Psalm 23. Then, almost immediately, I was reminded of the scripture passage above.

Elijah didn't grumble or get upset when the Brook Cherith dried up for him. Instead he heard the word of the Lord and moved with it to new supply. Elijah had arrived at the Brook Cherith by faith and he would stay or go by faith also. Elijah's expectation for provision wasn't based on what he saw or heard with his natural senses but on what his heart knew of God. He was not about to lament over the dried up brook for He knew God was his supplier! 2Cor.5:7.

How is it with you? Does news of "the brook dried up" shake you? It doesn't need to. You need to watch over yourself keeping yourself in faith, keeping your expectation focused on God and keeping yourself spiritually flexible. What do I mean by spiritually flexible? By it I mean that you aren't stuck in a rut of how you think God ought to keep doing things; you're willing to let Him do a new thing. God is not limited to a single source of supply! Psa.112:6-8.

Remember the Lord, your Shepherd!
