Psalms as prayers

by Pastor Simon

I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.

Psalm 34:1-2 - NKJV

One morning my heart led me to Psalm 34. As I declared it, praying it out loud I was wonderfully satisfied in spirit, soul and body. I commend you to this psalm as a starting point to a new spiritual experience of communion with God and an experience of the work of His Spirit and His Word.

The heart cries of the psalmist address our own inner condition. The words of the psalms release and at the same time communicate with God both the inner distress experienced in tribulation and the inner gratitude resulting from salvation. The words of the psalms express our need for God and declare our dependency on Him. They also petition the Father with a voice of faith and assurance in His lovingkindness. Psalms are prayers that satisfy both the heart of God and the heart of the one declaring it. Eph.5:18-19.

Some of God's most precious promises to us are contained in psalms. Won't you declare them along with the psalmist? Join with him in his expression of need and desire for God. Voice his words as though they were your words! When you do this you will follow him into his experience of release and restoration through God! What is the need of your heart and soul today? There is a psalm ready to minister a release and a satisfaction of that need in you. Go to psalms and seek out that heart cry that can be your heart cry. Here are a few of my favourites: Psalm 27, 45, 63, 92, 103.

Let a psalm be your prayer today
