Father and child relationship

by Pastor Simon

His father said, "Son, you don't understand. You're with me all the time, and everything that is mine is yours."

Luke 15:31 - The Message Translation

How difficult it seems to be for us to accept our unearned and always secure position of sonship in the Father's house! Hopefully, though, at this stage in your Christian life, you are comfortable with calling yourself a child of God. The next stage is to have the blessed assurance that the words the father says in the parable of the Lost Son are the words your Heavenly Father says to you - namely this, "Everything that is mine is yours!"

In that parable the father speaks those words to the lost son's older brother. It happens at the poignant moment when the father lovingly points out to him why he's having such a problem. It turns out he's failing to grasp how complete and enduring his position with the Father is. Indeed, both the sons in the parable were failing to realise the unconditional relationship of love the father extended towards them. The one saw his relationship with the father as entirely dependent on responsibility. The other thought his irresponsibility had ended his relationship of sonship and he'd have to be a servant.

You accepted Jesus as your Saviour as a result you are accepted as God's child through Him. You are a member of His household. "The washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit" has truly made you God's child! Pray for a revelation of the wonder and privilege of your relationship with your Heavenly Father. Look to God's Spirit to reveal to your heart the Father's love and commitment to you. Eph.1:6; 2:6,19; Tit.3:5.

Be at home in the Father's house!
