In the Shepherd's care

by Pastor Simon

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.

Psalm 23:1-2 - NKJV

You have a choice! You can 1) camp out where you are, 2) you can attempt to trek out of there on your own or 3) you can get in on the program King David was on when he composed Psalm 23. What was David's program? It was first of all thanksgiving and trust in the Lord as his Shepherd. It was also, importantly, keeping an eye towards the Lord so he could follow Him whenever it was time to move to better pasture.

Look at the verse above. It's from Psalm 23. Psalm 23 gets worked out in the lives of those who rejoice that they have such a Lord who does wondrous things for them! Such people - such believers, such followers of Jesus - look constantly and expectantly towards their Lord for His next move. They follow Him with excited anticipation. They have joyful confidence that where He's wanting to lead them is better than any good place they've ever been before! Joh.10:11, Psa.27:1.

I'm reminded of one particular, beautiful morning in the Cotswolds. I walked out onto the nearby playing field where I could see the sunshine highlighting the patterned hills. As I took in the scenery the Lord said, "Be encouraged. Take courage. I'm leading you out towards a better place. Trust Me. Give thanks for where I've brought you into today and stay expectant of movement towards even better places tomorrow." May those words encourage you to choose the way of life David chose. It is a good choice! Mat.11:28-30, Josh.1:9.

May you see in this life the Lord's goodness!
