Unlocking understanding
Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul.
Psalm 66:16 - NKJV
A couple of years ago I preached a sermon around that verse. Beforehand, in my personal devotions, I'd been reading the psalm it comes from. A prompting of the Holy Spirit within me brought me to a halt at that verse. I read it aloud. I spoke its call into the earth. I got excited by it.
Bible verses are often like doors - doors into realms of spiritual understanding. Some Bible verses, like natural doors, will open the moment you pull on them. However, others don't open to you at your first pull. They seem locked. If that's the case you can either leave them for another time or you can ask God's Spirit for the key. For me, if I'm halted at a verse by the Spirit then I ask the Spirit for the key to it. When I do, He usually highlights a word or short phrase of the verse prompting me that this will be the key to it opening to me. At this, I pick it up by faith and look to the Holy Spirit for how to use it to open the verse. Likewise, in your own reading you can be sure God wants you to have the keys that open scriptures! 1Cor.2:10-12.
The word 'soul' was highlighted for me in the verse above. I took that as the Holy Spirit's key word for me. I was then reminded of what Mary said. She said, "My soul magnifies the Lord!" (Note the word 'soul') That, in turn, reminded me of words from Psalms. The Psalmist said, "The Lord has done great things for us and we are glad!" (Note the similarity of expression.) Can you see how my key word was opening the verse? As it did I was finding refreshment and instruction. Luk.1:49, Psa.126:3.
