Christ's ministry
The Lord has anointed Me; To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah 61:1,3 - NKJV
I've started this devotional message with a Bible portion that speaks of trees, trees of righteousness. When I was a small boy growing up in Warwickshire there was a grand, old oak tree near where I lived. We'd regularly climb all over it going as high and as far as we could go. For me it will always be an enduring and prominent feature of my early childhood area. Such a tree is a creation of majestic beauty. That Bible passage is declaring we can be like that tree. Psa.92:12-15.
That Bible passage is part of the Mission Statement of Christ. It is Christ's mission on your behalf. It is always available to you. Here are some questions and responses that show how it can be at work for you. Have you been walking in a spirit of heaviness? Allow Jesus to put on you the garment of praise! Have you been mourning at your lack of success? Allow Jesus to pour out His oil of joy on you! Luk.4:18.
On earth Jesus walked in His mission statement. He still carries it out today. The ministry of the Christ is towards you right here and now. Accept Christ's Mission Statement as a statement to you personally. As you do, let its exchange take place: the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. His anointing over your life will plant you in the Kingdom of God. You'll become a tree of righteousness, the planting of the Lord.
May Christ make you one of His trees!
