Living stones
He spoke to his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish - stones that are burned?"
Nehemiah 4:2 - NKJV
There are some marvellous spiritual lessons in the story about Nehemiah rebuilding the Jerusalem wall. Take, for example, how Nehemiah's workers found displaced stones to work with. This echoes how the Holy Spirit takes you as He finds you and cleans you up so can you take your place in the work of God. The Holy Spirit restores you from a position of being dead in sins to being alive in Christ. You are made a living stone by the Holy Spirit's washing of regeneration and renewing. Eph.2:1, Tit.3:5, 1Pet.2:4-5.
What's important to realise is that you have to let the Holy Spirit take of hold of you and work on you. The Holy Spirit can only do as much with you as you let Him. You have to give Him your co-operation. Given your cooperation the Holy Spirit, like a master stonemason, examines you for how your inner beauty can be revealed. He has a place for you in mind. He's looking to clean you off and shape your edges so you can take up your place in God's spiritual house. You will be lovingly and carefully placed on the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus. In this way you get to be set firmly on the Rock of Revelation who is Jesus Christ our Lord. Eph.2:19-22.
Take no notice of the devil's crowd who ridicule God's people just like they did in Nehemiah's time (see the verse above). Let the Holy Spirit shape and clean you. Let Him revive you as the stones were revived by the stonemasons in Jerusalem. Continue on and declare, "Our God will see to it for us!" May the work of God's Spirit fit you for a special place in God's spiritual house. 1Thes.5:24, Psa.35:27.
May the work of God shape you!
