Courage under fire

by Pastor Simon

Everything is for your sakes, and the purpose of it all is that grace, as it reaches more and more people, should beget an ever-increasing flood-tide of gratitude to the glory of God. That is why we never lose heart.

2 Corinthians 4:15-16 - William Barclay's translation

Paul testified, "We never lose heart." How was he living in that condition? By courage! Encouragement is courage entering in. Paul had courage because he was conscious of grace. In spite of all that came against him Paul knew the encouragement of God in his life.

Consider for a moment how the apostle Paul lived. Paul was aware of grace. Even when all else seemed to be failing he was conscious of God's grace at work in his life. This encouraged him to go on. Courage entered into his life as he reflected on God's grace towards him. By grace he could see what he was striving to accomplish would be accomplished. He saw it didn't depend on his own effort - grace would be available! Eph.2:8, 1Cor.15:10.

At those moments when you're faced with seeming failure put yourself in remembrance of God's grace. You were saved by grace and by grace you're going to complete your course. In your consciousness of God's grace you'll see the good place you're headed for and the spiritual legs you have in Christ for getting there. Your consciousness of grace will fill your heart with courage. As a result, there'll be no place for timidity or a sense of hopelessness. May you be of good courage through your knowledge of God's grace! Do not lose heart; be encouraged! Heb.12:12-13, Psa.27:14.

Consider God's grace and by it be encouraged!
