Seeing the heart
Don't judge by externals; let your judgment be really just.
John 7:24 - William Barclay's Translation
Discernment - you've got to have it by God's Spirit in these days we live in! The prophet Daniel warned that there would be those attaching themselves to the church who would be just hangers on using flatteries. In the New Testament Jesus warned of false prophets. It is right that we should be ever ready to believe the best of every person. However, let's do this safely by heeding the Holy Spirit's nudges. His nudge might be to tell us that all is not as it appears. Da.11:34, Mat.7:15, 1Cor.13:7, Ro.8:14.
On the other hand, His nudge might be to tell you things are better than they appear! How you are perceiving things may be after the perception your head has of them. You need to heed the Holy Spirit telling you of things at the level of the spirit. Something that happened with our church teens made me realise how important this is. They were asked what traits they expected to see in a Christian and one trait they wrote down was, "Looks at someone's heart, not appearances." They are right! Our Heavenly Father looks at the heart instead of at appearance. This is how you and I are to desire to look by His Spirit. 1Sam.16:7, Isa.11:4.
By God's Spirit look deeper than what comes across or does not come across as appealing. Ask the Lord for discernment of the motives and intentions people have. Likewise do this with events that are unfolding in the world. May you see beyond the visible realm and what's taking place in it to receive insight into what's moving it. May you see what is going on in hearts and in the realm of the spirit. Psa.34:7, Eph.6:12.
