Strands of a cord
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. But let each one examine his own work...for each one shall bear his own load.
Galatians 6:2-5 - NKJV
The bow string my daughter uses for archery is multi-stranded. The multiple strands of an archery string give it great strength and power. Every strand in the string bears a load and the load the string can bear far exceeds the total load that all the strands individually could bear. This illustrates how it is to be with a community of believers. Whether it's your Christian family, your Christian organisation or your Christian church, believers pulling together have a strength and power far beyond the sum of the individual parts.
It's good to regularly ask yourself, "Am I being a load bearing strand in the cord of God's community?" Our Christian care for one another calls for this. We are to put our shoulders to the load each according to our own individual ability and strength. At times, a brother or sister in Christ will need help bearing his or her load and you can be there to lighten it to some degree by carrying some share of it. Ro.15:1-2.
In life together as Christians, we ought to be all trekking together towards what the apostle Paul calls, "the mark for the prize of the high calling of God". William Barclay writes in his New Testament translation, "For everyone has to shoulder his own personal pack." So, as we trek, we all need to shoulder our own packs. However, let's be willing at times when the other is weak to shoulder his or her load too while strength is regained. In this way, together we can make progress and reach those strategic points on our route for Christ. Phil.3:14, Gal.6:5.
Loaded together we'll cross the victory line!
