The Father's sure grasp
God himself has said, "I will never let go my grip of you; I will never abandon you"
Hebrews 13:5 - William Barclay's translation
The Lord has got a grip on you. His grip is the sort of grip that members of the emergency rescue services use. His hold on you is not just as though palm to palm like the grip of a handshake. Rather, it is like He has a firm grip on your wrist. It means that, if in a moment of panic (or bewilderment) you were to let go your grip, nevertheless His grip remains firm on you. The security in this is like that Paul expressed it in his letter to Timothy, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful!" 2Tim.2:13, Isa.41:10.
I've met Christians who've said they'd let go of the Lord and were feeling He no longer had a hold on them. I've responded to this by saying, "Grip my wrist" and as they did I've gripped theirs. Then I've said, "Let go" but when they did I held on. "Look how you've let go," I explained, "but I've still got hold of you. This is how the Lord holds you. Retake your grasp and you'll realise He's never let go of you!" In stressful times you may let go your grip on God but nevertheless God is faithful to keep hold of you! Joh.10:28-29.
The Lord's grip is more like that of a guide at the fording point of a stream than that of a parent leading a child down a trail. Like the guide He faces you and, with His right hand gripping your arm, He steadies and upholds you as you negotiate your way across. Let it be revealed to your heart that God has no intention of ever abandoning you. Let your heart come to the realisation that God has a firm hold on you. In that realisation, you can boldly say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Psa.118:6.
Grasp the Father to know He's grasping you.
