Reflections in God's Word

by Pastor Simon

The man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.

James 1:25 - NIV

James the apostle gives us an exciting promise of blessing attached to the perfect Law of Liberty. I get a picture when I read the way he states it. I see myself peering over the edge of a well. The Sun is shining and the water level in the well is high. In the water I see two reflections - the Sun and myself. (For an outline of the Law of Liberty see the words of Jesus in John 8:31-32.)

This is like quality Bible reading. Two reflections are visible as you look intently into God's Word - one of the glory of God and one of yourself. The reflection of yourself is a spiritual reflection. It is that of you as a new creation. At the same time, though, the aspects of the inner you which are yet to be perfected are also noticeable. Nevertheless, one day, by being an active doer of God's Word, the two reflections will appear as one for the reflection of God's glory will overlay perfectly the reflection of you. 2Cor.3:18, Eph.2:26-27.

The reflection of you calls for action. It's like when you look into a hallway mirror before leaving the house. If your hair is a mess you brush it and then confidently leave the house. Spiritually, we can respond similarly to our reflection in God's Word! For example, I saw myself in Galatians 4:6. It says, "You are no longer a slave but a son (of God)." I responded to that by the way I went out and about my day.

See in God's Word His plan of glory for you!
