More on prayer in the Spirit

by Pastor Simon

What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:15 - NKJV

A lady wrote, "I have prayed myself practically to a stand still." She also explained what she meant. "When it feels like that," I replied, "then it's a sign you have a need to become more listening in prayer." I then provided this explanation using myself as an example. "I say a lot in prayer," I wrote, "but I always listen at the same time. A lot of time what I say comes out of what I hear. Although my lips may be issuing praise or making request the ears of my heart are open and attentive to the still, small voice of God's Spirit."

Listening like that will make a big difference. It means you can respond in prayer to the prompting of the Holy Spirit within you. For example, at a prompt towards a Bible portion, you can go to it, ponder it and pray it. This can change your attitude, your outlook or your intentions and it can change the requests you're making to the Father. So, start your petitions praying in the spirit then let this flow into praying with your understanding after the leading of the Holy Spirit within you.

This type of listening prayer comes out of an acknowledgement of what Paul wrote to the Romans, "We do not know what we should pray for as we ought." This type of prayer looks to the Holy Spirit but gives your understanding the opportunity to participate. Prayer from a listening heart is fluid, vibrant and receives an answer. Sense in your spirit the direction the Holy Spirit is taking in intercession and pray a corresponding prayer with words of your understanding! Rom.8:26-27.

In prayer, don't just talk, listen!
