Christ our quality of life
Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot.
Luke 12:15 - The Message
There is a pressure around to us to have things especially nice, expensive things. This arises because the societies we live in are materialistic - they exalt the possession of things as the way to status and happiness. If you live in a western country, this pressure is particularly great in the run up to Christmas. Thank God, in the verse above, Jesus restores us to a heavenly view of life. Our Lord Jesus tells us a person's life does not derive it's worth from what he owns.
This year at home we've been renovating and improving many parts of our house. Of course, along with this we've been painting walls and staining woodwork as part of the decoration. In the midst of this I've noticed one of my children becoming very conscious of material surroundings and appearances. It's connected to what school friends are viewed as having. This has concerned so I took this to the Lord in prayer. As I did there arose in my heart these words, "It is the atmosphere in which you live and not the decor that surrounds you that is most important!"
In all of our Christian homes what is most precious is the atmosphere in which we live. In Christ we live in an atmosphere of peace, love and grace. Even the world will notice this. Even the people of this world notice the atmosphere of a place more than the decor in it. Let's have Jesus both surrounding us and taking centre stage in our homes and in our lives. Let Him be the atmosphere in which we live.
May heaven be in your home!
