Blessed as a believer

by Pastor Simon

I will lift up my eyes to the hills - From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2 - NKJV

I went out for a run one morning. The hills that form a glorious backdrop to the town of Cheltenham where I live looked majestic in the sunshine. These hills are visible from most places in the town but they look especially good from the playing fields near my home. It was in that place that I was exercising and enjoying the scenery. Psa.19:1.

I am English but my wife Ruth comes from Java in Indonesia. In Java, if you go out for a walk, people on the way call out in Indonesian, "Where are you going?" To which you reply in Indonesian, "Jalan-jalan saja, mau cuci mata". This means, "Just a stroll to wash my eyes". Washing your eyes by strolling through the countryside sounds good, doesn't it? Viewing God's creation washes my eyes and refreshes my soul! I can imagine king David doing the same thing in times of pressure. Then I can hear him say, "I will lift up my eyes to the hills." He doesn't stop with that though but then asks himself, "From whence comes my help?" To which he gives to himself the answer that his soul knew so well, "My help comes from the Lord".

Hey, you who are under pressure! Do you know the Lord? There is comfort for you in Christ. You do not need to stay under the pressure. Step out where you are aware of creation. Lift up your eyes to the hills (real or imaginary). Now ask your soul, "From whence comes your help?" Then with confident joy give yourself the answer your soul knows so well, "My help comes from the Lord!"

Be comforted in Christ!
