The good farmer

by Pastor Simon

These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time.

Mark 4:16-17 - NKJV

Are you a farmer or just a city cousin? The cousin comes out to the farm and gets all excited when he sees the field covered green by young sprouting seeds. "There'll be a great harvest there," he says and then he goes home. The farmer comes out and views the same field with a smile. Then he says, "I'll weed and protect it. I'll water it in dry times. With diligence there'll be a great harvest here." Which one of them will experience the joy of harvest? 1Cor.3:9.

I heard a story about a farmer who had such a visit from one of his relatives. On seeing the farm the relative declared, "What a beautiful place the Lord has given you." "Yes," the farmer replied, "but you should have seen it when the Lord had it!" Humorous and indeed slightly irreverent. The lesson though is that the farmer receives what the Lord gives and makes something of it by his endeavour. If you think back to the city cousin you see the contrast. He rejoices at what the Lord has given but then, instead of committing to the work, goes back to the comfort of home forgetting the labour required to prosper from the gift. Heb.10:36.

What will you do with what God has given? Will you be like the farmer or like his city cousin? In the body of Christ, the Church, we have lots of enthusiastic people but it looks to me like city cousins far outnumber farmers! Only the farmers see the way to a harvest, labour and get results. May the Lord give you a farmer's heart and a farmer's thinking by the counsel of His Word. Ro.12:2.

It's farmers who get harvests!
