Conifers instead of thistles

by Pastor Simon

Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.

Isaiah 55:1 - NKJV

Set above that verse, in the edition of the Bible I have, the publishers have written a heading for the chapter. It reads, "An invitation to abundant life". Wonderful! And the great thing is it's an invitation going out to "everyone who thirsts"! Do you thirst to have the life of God evident in your life? Do you thirst to see God's power and glory? If you so, this invite to abundant life is for you!

Isaiah chapter 55 is like a New Year message. It stirs you up and encourages you to make New Year resolutions. It gives you a way forward which sees you coming out at the end of this coming year having seen things dramatically turned round in your life. I love the way this chapter challenges me to evaluate my life and then, on the basis of that evaluation, it sets out for me a strategy of positive change and improvement. I love the way it illustrates the end result of implementing this strategy - it say, "Instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree". Isn't that a prospect! Where last year you kept seeing briers springing up in your life this year you can have myrtle trees instead.

So what's the strategy? To get all the details of the strategy you need to read the whole chapter. I'll summarise it all for you though this way: Take Christ as your Shepherd! Hear His voice, listening diligently. Let His words be as food and drink to you. Keep company with Him and follow His lead.

In Christ may your life be better in 2004!
