Heavenly Progress

by Pastor Simon

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.

Isaiah 28:10 - NKJV

It's upon basics that we build. The start of a new year or a new season is an apt time to look again at your Christian basics! By this I mean the foundational truths and the foundational principles of your life as a child of God. This attention to basics is what Isaiah is speaking about when he says, "Precept must be upon precept". In other words, lay a foundation of understanding so that upon it the next level of your understanding can be laid.

I am reminded of how it is with mathematics. The five children Ruth and I have all do well in mathematics. I acknowledge there is a something of a natural gift in this. Nevertheless, there is another factor. They all received a good grasp of the basics of mathematics when they were small. I home-schooled them in the early school years and I made sure they got those basics down well. In the absence of this, mathematics gets increasingly difficult to cope with as you move forwards in it. It is not just in mathematics that the basics are so important to progression. It is also true in Christianity.

How is it with you? Are you making good progress in the faith? If you find progress halted, slow or even going backwards then set aside time for the basics of your faith. Examine your own grasp of the foundational truths and principles. Here are a few questions you might ask yourself, "What spiritual event made me a new creation?", "How did I get into a covenant relationship with God?" or "What grounds do I have for believing my name is on Heaven's register?" Use your Bible and Bible study material to establish yourself in the Christian answers to these questions.

Take a fresh look at your basics
