Special relationships

by Pastor Simon

When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David...Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.

1 Samuel 18:1 - 4 - NKJV

Have you noticed God at work in relationships you're forming? I was reflecting on this one weekend while I was at the National (UK) Assembly of the YMCA. What I heard and saw was getting me excited about the YMCA's impact on young lives in this nation. How did I come to be involved with the YMCA? It happened by friendships developing with YMCA people and, in those friendships, sensing a divine dynamic at work.

What do I mean by a divine dynamic? It's my way of describing the power of God at work in certain friendships that the Lord has brought about. It's evident when the interaction taking place in them is energising and communicating a sense of some purpose of God being at work. For example, think about Nehemiah and King Artaxerxes. Their "friendship" led to Artaxerxes giving Nehemiah a sabbatical to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. As another example, in a different type of friendship, think about Paul and Timothy. Paul's depth of spirituality launched Timothy into Christian ministry. Neh.2, 2Tim.1.

To experience this at work in your life do this: 1) Identify relationships in your life that you sense have a divine dynamic about them. 2) Seek the Lord for how the divine dynamic of those relationships might find expression to God's glory. 3) Seek how that divine dynamic might further His kingdom in your life and the lives of others.

Look for a divine dynamic in friendships
