The work of the Spirit
We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28 - NKJV
Christians often quote the verse above to find consolation in it as they surrender to unfavourable circumstances. In doing so perhaps they aren't rightly discerning its impact. William Barclay in his New Testament takes into account the context in which that scripture resides and gives an insightful translation. He writes, "We know that through the work of the Spirit all the different events of life are being made to work for good, for those who keep on loving God, those whom His purpose has called."
How are the conditions of your life? The physical conditions in which your life is occurring at this moment do not provide you with a picture of the place you can soon be arriving in if you keep on journeying. For that you need to look in the spirit to the work of the Spirit. What is going on in the different events of your life through the work of the Spirit? What work is He doing to work out good for you? 2Cor.4:17-18.
In trying times I look to what the Spirit is engaged in working out for me. I encourage myself by seeing the developing work of the Spirit in the different events of my life. I look at that work to see where I've come from, what work is in progress, what stage I might be at in it and what could be on the horizon for me as a result. This faith in the work of the Spirit keeps me pressing forwards. By faith like this, and with it endurance, I continue on in my life towards valuable destinations in Christ. Heb.6:12.
Whatever is happening, see the Holy Spirit!
