Life at work
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 - NKJV
My wife is in catering and works at a residential home for the elderly. I pick her up when she finishes and listen on the way back as she tells of things that have happened. I am often taken aback at the things said or done by people in the workplace.
How does she handle it? How does she rise above it and keep going? Well, it helps that I provide a listening ear and am there to pray things through with her. The most important key to her victory, though, is the focus of mind and spirit that she has. She works as to the Lord. She keeps her heart towards Him and prizes above all His acceptance and favour. Her view is that she is working as to the Lord and not to other people. Knowing she is accepted with God through Jesus, she values the esteem she has in His sight. This focus on the Lord keeps her in peace trusting in His promises while men and women say or do things that might otherwise bring her down. Isa.26:3, Heb.1-2.
It is not easy living or working in a non-Christian environment. However, you'll find in the words of Christ and His apostles the equipping you need to rise above it all. Scripture gives us good counsel on how to live in joy in spite of the tribulations of the age. The lines of a well-known worship song sum that counsel up well, "With my heart rejoicing within, With my mind focused on Him, With my hands raised to the heavens, All I am, worshipping Him". Joh.16:33, 1Pet.1:8-9.
Looking to Jesus you'll find your strength and grace!
