Joseph, a role model

by Pastor Simon

Joseph returned immediately to Israel with Jesus and his mother. But when he learned that the new ruler was Herod's son Archelaus, he was afraid. Then, in another dream, he was warned to go to Galilee. So they went and lived in a town called Nazareth.

Matthew 2:21-23 - NKJV

It's always easier to make a journey if someone has made it before you. What an advantage you have if you can follow in a person's footsteps because a record of his steps has been left. Jesus left you with the greatest journey record of all, a clear trail in life for you to follow. Also, trails have been left by people of God who walked in faith. Indeed, the Bible provides you with role models from some of the most unexpected sources.

Consider Joseph the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus. In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 2 there's a record of the life journey he made at a time when his part in God's plan of salvation was a very crucial one. Who knows how crucial your part might be in some plan of God at this time? Take some journey tips from Joseph. You can do this by considering the roles Joseph took on. Some are obvious ones, like father and husband but the less obvious are perhaps even more significant to the well-being of the child Jesus. Joseph also took the roles of travel agent, journey planner, protector and provider. In all of these roles Joseph was faithful to the heavenly calling they held. He saw beyond the burden of their responsibility to the joy of their potential outcomes.

As the new year begins reflect on your roles. Recognise the roles you're being presented with. Each one has responsibilities. However, see them not as mirrors that are reflecting back duties but rather as windows giving you views of opportunities.

Live out your life roles with vigour!
