Saved from the storm

by Pastor Simon

Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, They see the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep.

Psalm 107:23 - 24 - NKJV

My wife and I were watching a Time Team programme on TV about the development of Liverpool. They told the remarkable story of the creation of safe havens that allowed trading vessels to dock for loading and unloading whatever the state of the tide. Liverpool flourished as a result and grew wealthy. The TV programme showed the City's Chamber of Commerce building. Around the central dome could be seen the main part of that wonderful Bible verse above.

The trading seafarers of old saw "the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep". They also experienced a great deal more than this. The psalmist tells us of storms they encountered that took them to their wits' end and left them staggering like drunken men. He also tells us that in such times as they cried out to the Lord they experienced His miraculous intervention to save them. They came out into calm and quiet waters and God guided them onwards into their desired and safe destination. Their arrival brought rejoicing and prosperity. Psa.107:25-32.

This mariner's experience is for us a metaphor for the storms of life. None of us are except from stormy times. Who among hasn't found themselves so battered by the conditions overwhelming them that they feel at their wits' end? What are we to do if such a storm of life hits? We are to cry out unto the Lord. The Lord will save you. The Lord will calm the storm and still the waves. You will sail on. Delivered from your distress, you will be guided onwards from the place of storm into "your desired haven". Luk.8:22-26.

Look to the Lord your deliverer
