Portraits of Christ
Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross.
Hebrews 12:2 - NKJV
As a child I attended a Catholic junior school. In the school hall, at points around the four walls, were portraits of the Cross. They called them stations of the Cross. At Easter pupils made their way around those stations to pray. I thought about that recently when I found in my Thompson Study Bible the portraits of Christ that John's Gospel presents. His Gospel's twenty-one chapters give twenty-one portraits of Christ.
I was reminded of the completeness of Christ as I reflected on those portraits. In chapter twenty-one He is the Restorer. He restores my soul. He restores me to God. He restores me to fellowship. In chapter twenty He is the Victor of Death. How can I be afraid of any enemy? For I know my Saviour is the victor over every enemy, including the last enemy, which is death! In chapter nine He is the Light of the World. How can I fret over finding my way in life? For I know my Saviour is the Light for my path! Psa.23:1, Rom.8:37, Psa.27:1.
I pray daily for the people of my church and for my Gospel partners worldwide. The portraits of Christ that John's Gospel paints encourage me as I pray. In chapter three I see Jesus presented as the Divine Teacher. That personal teaching from our Saviour is precious to us and with that portrait in mind I can pray in confidence for it. In chapter fifteen I see Jesus presented as the True Vine. May those who are ill at ease see Christ as the True Vine and themselves as branches in Him. 2Cor.3:18, Phil.4:13.
See Jesus today as the One you need!
