In hope pray on
Men (and women) ought always to pray and not lose heart
Luke 18:1b - NKJV
Someone contacted me to tell me about the troubles and heartache they had been going through. They ended their message, "I have been praying very hard at first, but I have stopped praying now. What can I do?" I replied, "Well, the first thing I would say is don't stop praying! Remember Luke 18:1." Luke 18:1 is the scripture I've started this devotional message with. It's an exhortation we should all take to heart in trying times.
In times of trouble we need to be praying on. For this we need expectation. Hope and expectation are very closely connected. Bible hope is a vision of good with expectation of receiving it. So it's hope in God we need in trying times. Allow the Holy Spirit to build up your hope so you can pray on. Find hope-building passages of scripture and ponder them looking to the Holy Spirit to minister hope to you by them. The Psalms provide some wonderful passages suitable for this. This is because so many of them are penned by David as he recorded his trials and the eventual triumphs he found in God. Rom.15:13, Rom.8:25.
In the New Testament we read the testimony of how Elijah prayed and "the heaven gave rain." Take a look back, though, in the Old Testament at the details of this story and you'll discover it wasn't quite as straight forward as that brief version of the testimony sounds. You'll discover it didn't rain immediately at his first prayer. In fact, he prayed eight times, as he kept a watch out for rain, before the rain finally started to move in. Let us all persevere like that in prayer. Jam.5:18, 1 Kings 18:41-46.
