Eat what is good

by Pastor Simon

For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.

Job 34:3 - KJV

"How does that sound to you?" That question is often asked of us by a friend or colleague. They do so when they've suggested a course of action. It's actually a call to let our ears try the words spoken and see how we like them. Sometimes it's easy to answer and sometimes not. If it were food we were trying it would be pretty easy. We're used to tasting food and deciding if we like it. We've had lots of practice at that. Most people, though, aren't well-practiced at testing words with their ears.

If you think about it, it's amazing the foul tasting words we allow to be fed through our ears. Food like that in our mouths would be spit it out instantly and not another bite taken. Why then do we hang around listening to unpalatable words? Because we're not trained or encouraged to taste words like we taste food. The Bible, though, calls us to do this. The apostle Paul, for example, exhorts, "Test all things; hold fast what is good." It seems a lot of time people just don't know what is good. To help out here the Psalmist exhorts, "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good." Listen to what God's word declares and discover that God is good. Then you have a base-line that calibrates the taste buds of your ears to know what is good. 1Thes.5:21, Psa.34:8, Rom.12:2.

There's more to this food analogy. We have young students stay with us from all over the world. There's one thing about food they have in common. They don't want to eat green vegetables. I'm sure their mums told them it was good but they refuse to get their taste buds use to it and so miss out on this essential dietary ingredient. The same is true about God's Word. We have to get the taste buds of our ears use to God's Word. It's a spiritually essential dietary ingredient that we must have. Heb.5:14, Deut.8:3.

May your ears discover what is good
