Appropriate expectation

by Pastor Simon

Study to shew (show) thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 - KJV

Are you frustrated at waiting for a promise you have from the Bible to be fulfilled? It will help you to realise this: every promise has a story. It's story runs through the Bible. It gives it history, future and other companion promises. It gives the promise a context. Have you taken time and diligence to study something of your promise's story? Do this and you will rest an appropriate expectation on the scriptural promise.

I wrote a devotional message about the dependability of God's Word. Shortly after this I got a prayer request from a pastor for his village in India. He wrote, "God sent me to this place to proclaim the Gospel. God promised me from Psalm 2:8 saying 'Ask, and I will give you all the nations, the whole earth will be yours.'" He was getting frustrated at the continued sinfulness in the village and added, "their hearts are so hard that do not want to receive the word." His burning desire was for their salvation. He sounded frustrated though that the expectation he had resting on that promise was long in coming to pass. It made me wonder at the appropriateness of his expectation. Was he really mindful of the promise's story as it is told in the Bible? Did he know who it was spoken to directly? Did he know how it comes to us? Did he know any Bible prophecies related to its fulfilment? Knowing this would ease his frustration.

What promise are you standing on and looking for fulfilment? If you're getting frustrated in waiting look for your promise's story. Study it. Who was the promise originally spoken over? How does the promise come to you? Are there any prophetic passages about its fulfilment or historical passages about people seeing it come to pass? What are the companion promises to the promise? What guidance is there about your role in the promise's fulfilment?

Cherish that precious promise God has given
