Faith isn't feeling

by Pastor Simon

I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

2 Timothy 1:12 - NKJV

Faith is not feeling. Although having faith will eventually be experienced as a sense of well-being, faith itself is not feeling. For example, when you look for faith in a place or event, you are most likely looking for a feeling of faith. This is not genuine faith. Where are you to look for faith? Faith is what you have when you take God at His Word. Faith comes to you when God's Word speaks to your heart.

I have been corresponding with a lady who is trying to have faith in God. She's struggling. This isn't how it should be. A measure faith is given to everyone and from this measure of faith a full-bodied faith is meant to grow as the Word and the Spirit is added to it. However, coming across people who seem to have lost even their measure of faith isn't uncommon. It happens where they have been starved of Word and Spirit and then, on top of this, they have suffered some emotionally dark period in their life. This kind of experience gives rise to people saying, "It knocked the stuffing out of me". Spiritually it can knock the measure of faith out of them. Rom.12:3.

What can be done? A phrase the apostle Paul uses provides us with the key to having faith. It is even the key to recovering the measure of faith. In his writings Paul used the phrase, "I am persuaded". He was persuaded of good things coming from God. What persuaded him? God's Word. He let himself be persuaded by God's Word. He searched out God's promises in scripture and allowed that to persuade him. He took up God's Word with the mind set "it is so because God says so". This persuaded Him that what God had promised He was able also to perform. Thereafter he walked forwards on that basis and came (eventually) to the place of experiencing it, seeing it manifest. Rom.8:38, 2Tim.1:12, Rom.4:21.

Let God's Word persuade you of His promise
