Soul talk

by Pastor Simon

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.

Psalm 43:5 - NKJV

People in general don't have much self-control - their minds think what they want and their emotions run riot! Yet God ordained a divine order in man - spirit over soul over body. Your soul is your mind, emotions and will. Your spirit needs to be exercising authority over what you're thinking and willing and how your emotions are behaving. Psalm 103:1-5.

A number of years ago, a Christian convention we planned to attend was getting close and we still did not have the money to go. I was letting myself get upset about it. Money was due to us but its arrival kept being delayed. I took this to Lord and He replied, "Your attention is on the money due you but it should be on Me!" I realised my mind and emotions were out of check. I asked for the Lord's forgiveness and grace to change. I then started speaking to my soul just as David did in the verse from Psalms above. This brought my attention and emotional connection back on God. Soon afterwards the money we needed came in. Psa.62:5-8.

Tell your soul to hope in God. Tell your soul you're going to praise Him. It's important to speak to your soul, particularly, in times when you're facing great pressure or trials. Tell your mind you require it to be filled with God's Word and focused upon it. Set your mind rehearsing God's benefits, meditating on God's promises, considering God's counsels. Years of waywardness of mind and emotions may make it hard to accomplish at first, but keep at it - there is a rich reward!

Say to yourself, "Bless the Lord, O my soul!"
