Digging the Word
If any one who comes to me, listens to my words and puts them in practice, I will show you whom he is like. He is like a man who built a house, dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
Luke 6:47-48 - Weymouth's Translation.
There's a challenge to most of the parables Jesus told. His parable about building your house on the rock is no exception. The challenge of that parable is putting God's words into practice. In meeting up to the challenge there's a reward - it's of becoming like the man who built his house on a foundation of rock! The question is, "How do you meet up to the challenge?"
Jesus calls you to dig deep! This isn't about physical digging. This is about digging in God's Word deep enough to see how to do it. I enjoy digging in God's Word. I dig with the help of the Holy Spirit and with the Holy Spirit's help I dig deep. I get started by getting a leading of the Holy Spirit on where to dig, that is, where to ponder scripture. Once I've got that there are three things I do. 1) I read the passage aloud. 2) I look to the Holy Spirit to teach me as I stay expectant that God will speak through the passage. 3) I stay with the passage long enough for a flow of ministry from the Holy Spirit to get going. Do these three things and the passage will be brought to life and relevancy to you.
Digging, of course, requires a spade. Ponder scripture in the way I've outlined above and the Holy Spirit will provide you with related scriptures relevant to the passage you're reading. These other scriptures can become your spades. With the Spirit's help you can use them to remove the sand of intellectualism from the passage until you come to the foundation for life they provide.
Storm-proof your life - dig deep!
