The Daily Guide
Accompanied in life by God's goodness
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:5-6 - NKJV
My wife and I at one time ran a town centre Christian lunch room called The Oasis. Sometimes we'd get to lunch time and the place was still empty! Whenever it was, I would gather up some promotional leaflets and head off to the main shopping street to distribute them. As I went I would speak aloud to myself and to the Lord the scripture portion above. I would distribute for about 10 minutes and then return to see the response. Very often the place would be filling up to capacity. The leaflets helped but it was God's goodness and mercy that did the work!
Take a fresh look at those words in Psalm 23. The psalmist's declaration about the Lord were formed out of his knowledge of the Lord and the promises of the Lord towards him. When scripture portions get familiar like those in Psalm 23 you have to stir yourself up to hear their power. Tell yourself again that those precious promises have come through the mouth of God's prophet by God's Spirit. Remind yourself they are written for your encouragement and that they are there for you to apply to your life.
God wants every day of your life to be accompanied by His goodness and His mercy. Begin your day today by declaring, "The Lord is my Shepherd!" Then, all through the day, go on declaring, "Of a certainty, goodness and mercy are accompanying me! Jesus, my Shepherd, is anointing my head to ensure this!"
Expect goodness and mercy today!
