Choose Life

by Pastor Simon

Moses said, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him."

Deuteronomy 30:19 - NKJV

Choices. We have to make them constantly. For this reason, as Christians, it is a task of our lives to learn how to make good choices. The imperativeness of this task is brought out strongly and with impact in the Bible verse above. In it God, having made available to us by the Prophets an education in what leads to Life or Death, Blessing or Cursing, then turns to exhorting us as a Heavenly Father and says, "Choose life!"

Choosing a spouse, for example, is a critical life choice. A visitor to my web site asked, "Do you feel that God has already chosen our mates?" Intending to startle I replied, "Why would God do that?" I then explained, "God created man with free will. The nature of this free will is that he has the majestic ability to choose." We don't get far into the Genesis story before we see this getting exercised in Adam. He gets to choose names for the animals. This process develops his sense of what is a good choice. In this he recognises that none of the animals would make a good choice as regards a companion in life. Similarly in your life, God hopes you will look to the godly education, wisdom and discernment He provides you with to help you make good choices.

While God isn't out there making choices for you nevertheless He does give you lots of help in making choices. You can look first of all to God's Word where insight into outcomes is revealed. At the same time you can look to God's Spirit. God's Spirit stands alongside you with counsel and guidance. With the Holy Spirit, your Companion, is the grace and the strength to choose to walk the way of life. Now therefore, look to God's Word and pay close attention to His Spirit. 2Pet.1:3a, Prov.3:5-6.

Seek the Lord that you may choose the best
