The Daily Guide
Your Shepherd's Staff
Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 - Amplified Bible.
In the psalms the psalmist's language isn't just poetic. He had been there. He spoke from experience. He had experienced walking through the valley of the shadow of death. Death was casting a shadow in some of the places he'd been but even in those places he gave no place to fear. David stayed aware of his Lord with him. Many times in his life he had seen the Lord with him deliver him! 1Sam.17:34-36.
Sometimes on your journey - the one to where you get to lie down in green pastures, close to still waters - things start to look menacing. How do you walk unafraid where even death and its relatives are casting a shadow? Like David, you have to know that the Lord who loves you and cares for you is with you. You have to see Jesus. You need to take comfort in the sight of His rod and His staff. The shepherd's rod is as the king's sceptre. It states his authority. Wherever it is extended for you it delivers to you the security that comes from kingly favour and protection. Psa.23:2, Psa.27:1-3, Heb.1:8.
Besides this rod, Jesus the Shepherd also has a staff. You can always see His staff. He holds his staff upright so you can see it even when you've lagged behind. His staff is His guiding Word. You are to watch where it is going, allowing it to lead you. You are to follow it diligently. It's leading you out of harm's way, into green pastures and waters of rest!
In the Shepherd's company walk fear free!
