Pilgrim's Progress

by Pastor Simon

Blessed is the man whose strength is You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage.

Psalm 84:5 - NKJV.

This scripture speaks of pilgrimage. Someone on a pilgrimage is a pilgrim. A pilgrim is a person who has set out on a journey to a holy destination. If you are a committed pilgrim your heart is filled with a yearning to reach the place that you believe God has in mind for you to be. It's a life destination in God. The Holy Spirit through scripture calls us all to earnestly set off as Christians towards that destination. This is why it says of the men and women of faith that they "confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." Heb.11:13.

I am excited to think that I am on a pilgrimage. I'm headed for a life destination in God. On my pilgrim's journey I get excited at points I reach along the route. I revel in moving forward and by the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit finding myself day by day a little bit further along on my pilgrimage. It is clear that some Christians loose their way for a time on this pilgrimage. However, how much worse to have never known that you were meant to be on a journey as a Christian. If you lose your way, it's likely you'll soon find a signpost or someone to get you back on the right track. But, if you forget or don't know you're meant to be going somewhere, you'll never go anywhere!

The apostle Paul - moved by the Holy Spirit - wrote, "Whom He (God) foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son." This is a call to remember you have a life destination in Christ. It isn't teaching a doctrine of predestination as most think of predestination. It's declaring rather that there's a destination in the mind of God for everyone who is in Christ Jesus. That destination is glorious. It's to model Jesus in our lives here and now. As He was in the world so are we to be in the world. Are we moving towards that place? Let's set our hearts on that pilgrimage.
