A destination in Christ

by Pastor Simon

For long ago, before they (those who love God) ever came into being, God both knew them and marked them out to become like the pattern of His Son, for it is His purpose that His Son should be the first and eldest of a great family.

Romans 8:29 - Barclay's Translation

The children I have are all very much individuals. They have their own personalities and individual talents. Yet, there's a real similarity among them in personality traits. They all have quiet assurance and good humour. God has something like this in mind for you and me as His children. We are are all individuals and yet as we move forward in our faith we can become more like Jesus in character. God desires for us to come into the place where we're looking in spirit like His Son.

Some Christians have got lost on their way to that place. I once heard a story that gives an illustration of the problem. It seems, a railway company had a goat to deliver but couldn't get it to its destination. The station master questioned his staff, "Why haven't you got this goat to where he needs to be?" To which they replied, "'Cus, he's darn chewed his tag!" In the same way, some Christians somewhere along the line have chewed up their destination tags. How can their pastors get them to where they need to be?

The pattern Jesus provided was one of perfect sonship to the Father! Jesus pleased the Father. He reflected the Father. He did the works of the Father. (See Joh.8:29, 14:9 and 5:19) That's the destination that was on our tags when we became Christians. Are we moving ever closer to that place or have we chewed off our tags? If we've done the latter, let's get ourselves re-tagged! Read Ephesians 4:11-13 for a "how to" class.

Go on - be like Jesus!
