Praying in the Holy Spirit
Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62:8 - NKJV
There are moments in every week when my concern over people or things gets to my heart and it begins to weigh heavy there. I struggle in prayer with words from my understanding to lift them away to God but they aren't enough. What can I do? I can allow the Holy Spirit to intercede for me and in me! Ro.8:26-27.
I regularly need to pour out my heart to God. I know of no other way of effectively doing this than praying in the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues. When I pray in tongues I experience a stream of supplication rising up from my heart in an audible communication to God that is beyond the sphere of my understanding or my normal verbal language. When I pray in tongues I experience my heart getting cleared of all that has accumulated there. In contrast, my attempts to do this in my own words alone fail to reach the bottom of it. It seems as though much of what lies on my heart lies out of reach of my normal vocabulary. 1Cor.14:14-15, Jude 20-21.
If you're Spirit-filled, here are some helps for initiating prayer in tongues: 1) Disengage your head from your mouth! You have to tell your mind to let go of its control! You have to turn over your tongue to your heart so that your heart - or the Holy Spirit in your heart - can speak! 2) Begin praising the Lord aloud and then - as you're praising - allow the Spirit of God to take over the use of your tongue. Later, as your heart's distress is eased, petition the Lord with your own understandable words also.
