Fathers in the Lord
He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Luke 1:17 - NKJV
There is a groaning in society for this scripture to have fulfilment! The children need the fathers! Are we praying enough for the fathers? Fathers need our prayers. In so many cases the fathers have never received a vision for their pastoral role with their children. Either this or else they never saw how they could possibly do it. As a result, by default or through pressure, they have left the nurturing and training of the young ones to the mothers or to the Christian schools. See Eph.6:4.
Let's pray for the fathers that they - by the grace of God - may be fathers in the Lord to their children! This isn't easy for them. They are struggling to carry out this responsibility in the home because their fathers didn't do it - they have no example to follow or role model to copy. They're struggling too because, in society, fathers aren't even seen reading a book, much less heard reading the Bible to their family. Yet the Bible's exhortation to the fathers is to be the pastor in the home and for his family is to be his flock. Gen.18:19.
We need to pray for fathers. God has given fathers - over and above mothers - the responsibility for bringing up the children in the training and admonition of the Lord. God calls fathers to be praying with the children and reading the Bible with them. This is because fathers are uniquely made and fitted for this job. This is an awesome challenge for fathers today but it is one that by the prayers of the saints they can begin to fulfil!
This weekend let's pray for fathers!
