A Sense Of Timing
A wise heart knows the proper time and procedure. For there is a proper time and procedure for every delight.
Ecclesiastes 8:5-6 - NASV
It's good to get God's guidance on what to do. It is even better to be a person of a wise heart knowing best when to do it. This is discernment of timing. There is a right timing for things. Even the coming of Jesus was perfectly timed. Thank God that as Christians we can know the best timing by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can give us good judgement on the right moment to act or to speak so as to have good success and not get caught in the pitfalls. Ecc.3:1, Gal.4:4-5.
A characteristic of Paul's ministry was right timing. By his relationship with the Holy Spirit he knew when to go and when to stay, when to act and when to wait to act. His obedience to his heavenly vision was not just in action but also in timing. Look at how he knew from the very time of his conversion what his work for the Lord was to be and yet he waited for the Holy Spirit to signal the time to fully embark on it. The moment he got it he set out! Acts 26:19, Acts 9:9:15 and Acts 13:2-4.
A few years ago I considered whether or not to sit on the board of a local Christian association. Looking at it I had experience and interests that I could beneficially bring to it. Was it the right time for me to be get involved though? Could my gifts at that time be of help? I needed discernment like Paul did. I needed to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Maybe at this time you're in a similar situation. If so, pray a prayer like this, "Lord, help me to be like Paul and, by sensitivity to Your Spirit, get my timing right in all things."
There's a joy in right timing!
