Seeking God early

by Pastor Simon

O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory.

Psalm 63:1-2 - NKJV

A lot of the trouble we find ourselves in comes because we fail to seek God early. We put up with troubles and soon we're in a lot of trouble everywhere. You must have heard the common saying about rips or tears. It says, "A stitch in time saves nine!" It's great to mend tears as soon as they appear but David knew that with God a tear could be stopped before it got started! David therefore looked to God to prevent tears altogether.

It isn't wise to wait before seeking God or calling out to him. At the slightest sign of a problem you need His intervention. Look for it at the earliest possible moment. David knew he had to do this. He recognised he needed to seek God early in every circumstance. To seek here it means to enquire for and of God, requiring Him as you require food. David had experienced that in seeking God God sorted things out for him pre-emptively. God would stop a tear before it started, deliver him from rips that had already started and repair faultlessly any damage that had already occurred.

As I see little troubles, little problems or little afflictions arising what should I to do about it? I should look towards God in His sanctuary and call upon His power and His glory! I should get hold of His promises and welcome His Comforter. You can do this! No matter how small the need, seek God early and let Him intervene mightily by His Spirit. Let Him set things in order according to His precious promises! 2Cor.3:5, 2Pet.1:4.

At your earliest opportunity seek God!
