O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1 - NKJV.
A Jehovah Witness knocked at my door one day and she only knew of God as the Almighty up in Heaven. As I listened, there came a longing in my heart to share with her God down very present with us. I told her of Jesus. I told her of how Jesus had brought me to God that I might know Him as my God present with me. (See also John 20:17)
David is expressing this marvellous knowledge and relationship in the psalm above as He says, "O God, You are my God!" David is in absolute awe of God and yet, at the same time, he is in elated wonder that this awesome God has consented to the intimacy of a close relationship with him.
You and I need to know God this way! We need to know God high and lifted up but we also need to know God down with us and very near. We need an absolute awed and reverential respect in the presence of God but, at the same time, a knowledge of His willingness to relate to us tenderly, intimately and personally. How will this come about? It will happen to us as we seek God daily through His Son, Jesus, and as we learn of Him by His Spirit through His Word.
