Christ the Minister and Mediator
May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favour and give you his peace.
Numbers 6:24-26 - New Living Translation
What a beautifully worded blessing! The Bible extract above is the blessing God instructed Aaron and his sons to speak over the children of Israel. They spoke this blessing as priests of God according to the Old Covenant. It was a blessing confirming upon the people the favour of God as they had it through their covenant relationship with Him.
There is a priest who declares an even greater blessing over us today. Our priest is Jesus Christ. Jesus is for us the High Priest of the one true sanctuary erected by God in the Heavenlies. He is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. He was designated by God as High Priest after the power of an endless life! Christ's resurrection from the dead confirmed Him at the place of highest honour in this heavenly ministry as High Priest for us. His ministry is sublime - it is of the greatest and highest sort infinitely surpassing the ministry of Aaron and those of that priestly order. Heb.7:16, Heb.8:1-6.
We come to God through Jesus Christ. Jesus is for us the Mediator of the New Covenant. It is entirely through Jesus that we have this special relationship called the New Covenant with God our heavenly Father. God welcomes us in Jesus. He accepts us in the Beloved Son. Take comfort - your relationship with God and your blessing from Him is sure in Jesus! Jesus our Saviour is both High Priest and Mediator.
